Fireplace Help and New Do....

Here is the fireplace with the insert that we have had for the last fifteen years. We don't use the fireplace and I had been wanting to remove this and put candles or something in the fireplace. Well, with my mom's help (of letting Alan know it would look better without this) we removed it this past weekend.
It was a mess! We have scooped all the remaining ashes out and scrubbed and scrubbed and scrubbed! We will be trying different solutions that we have found on-line to try to get a bit more of the soot off. Do any of you know what we might use?
I found this iron candle holder with the candles at a yard sale several months ago for $6.00 and it had been stored in the garage just in case.......
What would you all do in this space now? Of course, the pictures show every little yuck....actually I don't think it looks so bad. You know it is the same thing as trying to get a good picture of the Christmas tree.....it is hard!
Also, I got a new haircut the other day. This was the next day trying to do it myself. I have now had several days to work with it and can "fix" it even better. I am enjoying it.

Hey Darlene,

Personally, I love your fireplace and what you've done with it. I think it looks great just as it is.

Your haircut looks really nice, too! I'm in need of one myself. I don't know why, but it's something I always put off until I can't stand it any longer.

The fireplace looks great..I had one of those candelabras because we didnt use our fireplace..we since replaced that with a fake electric one that looks real behind our wrought iron screen.....your hair looks great!

LOVE the haircut. I think it looks great. I have a haircut phobia. I mostly just cut mine myself. HA
Now, that fireplace was a lot of work but boy, it was worth it. It looks SO good. Love that candle holder. Enjoy it and that new do.

First of all...I love your new hair cut...it looks great! Next, we had an insert for years and removed it. We never got all the soot off but it's ok because we use it as a fireplace. I think yours look fine as it is. You have gotten most off.

Good Morning Miz Darlene,
Va va voom! You're haircut is lovely! And it's a great picture of you too.

Love your fireplace. Will you be using it as a fireplace ever? Just curious. I honestly don't think the soot looks as bad as you think, it looks like a fireplace! LOL And the candles are beautiful in there, in the summer you could do a basket of flowers... I think you have a lot more decorating options now with that insert removed. Definitely worth all your hard work and effort.
Have a wonderfully blessed week!

Hi Darlene
I think your fireplace looks wonderful with the iron candle holder you have there. The only other idea I could think of to put logs in there. I once saw in a magazine where they completely filled up a fireplace with logs and all you could see from the front were the round ends of the logs and it looked great. I love your new haircut it really suits you. I am the same, it always takes me a few days to get it right myself with a new style.
Best Wishes
Lindsay

Ooooh, you did good, girl...with the haircut and the insert removal! I love the wrought iron candle holder! It looks so pretty in there. If you aren't going to use the fireplace, what about painting the inside of the fireplace a solid taupe or tan? It looks fine the way it is, though. Great job!
Suzanne

Oh, I have seen fireplaces that had a big fern in them for the summer, and that looks good, too.

Thumbs up on the haircut - nice! I think you did a good job cleaning all that soot from the fireplace. You don't want it completely the same color as the outside because I think the "used" look adds to the appeal.

Kristy said...

LOVE the fireplace idea! I can't believe you scrubbed it out...I won't even shovel mine out after using it and hubby yelled when I vacuumed it out. I now see why so props to you. If you really want to change it, you could paint the inside an accent color or something but I think it looks fine the way it is too. I am a wrought iron fanatic so I love the candle holder but you could also use it as a way to display different vases or something in the summer if you wanted to. Just a thought! I like your new haircut too!!!

I think I'd get a really cool fireplace screen and then put in the fireplace a grate and wood and make it seem like a real fireplace. It does look better now than it did. Great job.

Smilingsal said...

That's a tough job you all did. I like your candle holder, with the pretty touches of red.

Your hair looks great! It's young and fresh.

Darlene,

The new haircut is adorable.

What about painting the inside of the fireplace black. They have heat resistant paint out there just in case you would want to use it as a fireplace again. A fireplace screen would look nice but then you couldn't see the candles. Hmmm. I'm sure what ever you decide to do will look great.

Melissa Wertz said...

I like the fireplace. It looks 'used' and natural. Candle holder looks very nice. Love the hair.

love the fireplace...we have gas logs and love them. I'll ask about what kind of cleaners to use??? The last house we did had a stove like that and my husband had to clean it after removing it..I'll let you know!

Love the hair cut, it looks great on you...I'm getting ready to do the same thing!

Ruth Ann said...

I actually like the sooty look! It adds to the charm! I LOVE the idea of candles like you have in your fireplace! I have a fireplace and if we didn't use it to burn wood, I would do the same thing! It looks so beautiful!

I like it much better! I would paint the inside black.

Love your hair!

Your haircut looks great!

I love how your fireplace looks without the insert! Very nice! I don't think it looks bad but they make fireproof paint you could paint in there or what about lining it with mirrors? You can get them cut into the three sizes you would need. It would reflect your candle light nicely.

Stacey @ The Blessed Nest said...

Your new haircut looks great :)! And I LOVE the new look for your fireplace, too! I can imagine using a plant in there in the spring/summer, with maybe some starfish or garden elements for an accent! And I really like the candles for fall/winter! Great job!

The Quintessential Magpie said...

First of all, I love your new "do." Very pretty. And I don't think the fireplace bricks look at all bad the way they are. I love the candles in there. If you are really bothered by it, do they make fireplace paint?

I like it like it is because it looks distressed. Plus, it's a fireplace! :-) I like that look. You did a good job scrubbing the soot out of it. I would leave it. For a change, you can also bank it with magnolia leaves by the armload (they make silks). That would be pretty, too! :-)

Good job on the hair and the fireplace!

XO,

Sheila :-)

Hi Darlene...you are so PRETTY! I love your "do"...also, I like what you did with your fireplace...I might consider it too if it weren't for the 45 years of use it has had to clean up (we've only lived here a year & a half so we didn't make the mess)... ;-) Bo

It looks like we all agree to keep the fireplace just as cute as you have it now and that your new "do" is fabulous!! Hey, you would look cute with a sack on your head, but that haircut is great!!! Dana

PS I can't believe you are going to have such wonderful temps!! We're hoping for a day of 50--then we're supposed to be cold and snowy for a few days. rats.

Hi Darlen, I know you must feel great to have that insert out and the candleholder in! I know how it feels when you've been waiting ages to get job done.

I really like your new 'do too!

Hi Darlene~
I love what you have done with your fireplace! To me, it looks very clean! I still have yet to scrub inside ours. Did you just use soap so far, because it looks fantastic. If you find a solution that you like, please let me know, because ours is BAD! :) I love the candles inside, too...beautiful! Also, your new haircut looks great! :)

Have a beautiful day! :)

Hi Darlene
Love your haircut. YOu have very pretty hair and love the colour too. Pretty. I am just getting ready for one this week too. I've been trying to grow it out so I have more choices.

The candles in the fireplace look so pretty. I wonder what you could use to clean it out more if you wanted to. Can you google that?

If you never were using it you could paint it I guess.

enjoy the flowers and your nicer weather.

In the house we lived in before we moved here we did pretty much the same thing you did with your fireplace but then painted the bricks white and boy did it make it pop and look beautiful-We got so many compliments on it that my Mom did the same thing with her fireplace. I really like what you have done. It looks so much better then with that insert!

Oh I love it Darlene! As far as cleaning it goes...you might try a little meratic acid...BE CAREFUL! Try it first on a small area and see how it does. I remember that is what we use to use on our brick fireplace.
Now, how to decorate it....do you ever watch Paula Deen...She does a great job..with her fireplace in the kitchen. I especialy love how she uses plants in hers in the Summer. Maybe a huge fern sitting back in it with a huge rooster sitting in front of the fern. Just some thoughts. I know you will be changing it up often...it's like having a new toy...lol Blessings, Nancy

Wow, I think you've done a GREAT job with that fireplace!! :) I don't know if you're due for a chimney cleaning (by a chimney sweep) but they can probably get it almost new looking for you.

I think we paid around $95 about five years ago when we put our last place on the market (in New England). I was amazed at how much better the firebox looked! Like you, I put candles in there and it looked so nice.

Hi Darlene,
First, you hairstyle is adorable! It looks great on you.

We added gas logs to our fireplace, and I love them! A click of a button and we have instant fire. Ours are butane powered, so we have a gas tank outside. You could add a pretty fire screen and I don't think the inside would bother you at all. Ours doesn't. In fact, it makes the gas logs look more 'natural'

I love the candles. That was a great buy! One other option might be a grouping of house plants. Depends I guess on how much light you have.

You new do looks wonderful! It has been a long time since I cut my hair last. About 2 years I guess. I used to keep it quite short and now it is down to my waist. I guess I am not ready for the month hair appointments yet which is how often I had to go to keep my short hair style. So the long length is fine for me for right now. I love the candles in the fireplace. If I had a fireplace I would enjoy doing something similar to that.

I saw where Bath and Body Works in one of their stores in georgia had a fireplace and had those glass jars of all sizes sitting in theirs with sand and different size candles and I thought it was cute...So I love what you have in yours..I like the candle look in fireplaces.

Oh and thanks for sharing the news with me...I was like in awe I could not believe it! i had told her I was going to buy one from her next month to get over Christmas but had no idea I win...so yep a good day!

Like the new do! I cut all of mine off a few months back and Im going through separation anxiety. I miss my long hair so much but looking at yours makes me want to keep it shorter. I love your color too!
The fireplace looks much better. Way to go Mom helping out on that one, hehe. Im not sure what would help with the soot, sorry. It doesn't look bad at all though. Those candles really make it pop! Looking pretty~

Pat said...

Have you gone to a fireplace or insert store. They make a regular cleaner for brick in fireplaces. I used it once on a friends house that I cleaned.

Then there is also a coating that you can get that makes it look almost polished. It made a world of difference in her fireplace.

I'm really liking what you did to your fireplace...it looks great with the candleholder and candles. Great job!

Hello Darlene, first of all I love your hair cut. You look very pretty and it suits you. Your fight with the soot has done some good because it is looking great with the candles. I wish I had some advice but wait a minute I have a book that tells how to clean practically everything. I'm going to look right now. Ashes and soot...Detergent NOT containing bleach mix with ammonia and scrub. Have you tried that? Never mix bleach and ammonia, it is toxic and could even kill you. Did you know that?

Well, all I can say is good luck. I do think it looks very nice right now. Did you know you can paint brick? HGTV does it all the time.
Look up DYI HGTV. Ok, I am out of advice.^_^

Hugs...Jeanne

Darlene,
The fireplace looks much better. Oxyclean works really well you might want to try that. Your hair is cute too. Can't wait to read what others say but I love it. Your brick might be able to be painted off white too? Also can you change it into a real fireplace? I do like it the way it looks now but those are suggestions.
