Some Weekend Work.....

On the holiday weekend, we took advantage of the cooler mornings and worked more on this side bed. I didn't take a "before" shot but that was the fourth wheelbarrow of leaves, dead flowers, vines, etc. pulled out of this bed. It is a much longer bed than the one I planted with my two hydrangea bushes, and for those of you who were concerned last time.....yes, I did wear my tennis shoes for this one!!! LOL!!
We also had some free pavers from a neighbor that had pulled them up and didn't want them so we pulled out rotten wood ties and put the pavers down as edging. MUCH better!!! Also, this is the most sun this area gets and you can see it is very is basically a full shade bed. I am thinking of planting it with hostas and ferns. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, you might remember this bed which I planted my hydrangeas in. It is in front of the bumped out part above (which is the fireplace).

We removed the make shift border of rocks and put the pavers all the way down the bed. I think it makes a LOT of difference and looks beautiful now.
Here is a long view with the pavers all the way down the side. Ahhhh, so much better. I still need to clean the brick in that corner (of the mold) but I think it all came together beautifully. Now, I will be putting mulch into the bed and hopefully planting in the Fall or I might just wait until the Spring. We will see!
Oh, and I just had to show you a couple of pictures of my Dad. He has never had a riding lawn mower and when they were here, he wanted to mow the yard at their home (that they will retire to)....Alan said have at it. He had a ball. He even came over and mowed in our front yard.

We have told him anytime they are coming to Oklahoma we will just let our yard grow and he can mow!!!
Hope you are all having a wonderful Wednesday!!

Wow, free pavers! Great. It looks wonderful too. So neat and clean. I know you will enjoy that bed. Free lawn mowing too!! That is cute about your dad and the riding mower. We got the shed cleaned out and down. What a mess. The whole yard had junk in it. Don't know how in the world I got all that in the shed. I see a trip to Goodwill in the future. Enjoy the day.

Yard work - fun, fun.
It does look nice. The pavers make a big difference. I think that neighbor deserves a pie.
Enjoy your Wednesday.

Working in the yard is so satisfying - or at least to me. You are like an artist...a blank slate to creat a beautiful picture..Hosta plants would look great there in the shade.

Your dad was like a boy with a new toy car ...zoom, zoom, zoom.

Enjoy the day!

yay for free pavers!! Hostas and fern will look good there, but the bed will be empty in the winter when they die you might also want something that is evergreen in there, too......I'll have to think about what would work in the shade. Caladiums would also look nice, but the same issue. If I think of something I'll get back to you! Good job, girl!

It looks great! Hostas and ferns will do well, I think. I have tried planting hydrangeas in the complete shade and they haven't bloomed. Boo hoo. I just love getting projects done.

I wish someone would want to mow my lawn! Our ride on stop working Saturday for some odd reason and my poor husband had to do our whole front yard (which is huge) with the walk behind. He went to try the mower yesterday before calling the repair shop....wouldn't you know it, it worked!!

Those edgers make the beds look much neater. For shade I'd do hostas (there are so many varieties with different colored leaves) and plant some bulbs of shade loving spring flowers since the hostas die back.

HI Darlene

Good job! I think it's a wonderful idea to plant hostas & ferns in this area, you wouldn't have to replant year after year.

Your garden beds look great Darlene. It's amazing how much difference the pavers make. The nice part of a job like this is that you get to enjoy the benefits of your work for a long time.

Ask your dad if he'd like to ride that mower to NC--he can do our yard anytime!

Looks great. Free pavers and some hard work equal great happiness. After working in the yard and transforming an area, I love to pull into the driveway and see my/our handiwork.

I've never been on a riding lawn mower--our yard is so small, but it looks like fun and it was nice of him to mow your lawn.
