My Recipe Project....

With the start of the New Year, I have started trying weekly menus. Along with my weekly menu, I want to try a new recipe each week. It can be a main course, side dish, dessert, just anything new. I have a lot of recipes, from blogs, torn out of magazines and just written down. I took all my recipes out of the cabinet and put them in this clear container. I am going through each recipe, deciding if I think we would like it and if I would make it. If the answer is no, or questionable, it is tossed right then. The ones that look good are getting put in clear sleeves. If they are hand written, they are getting typed up. Then they will be put in the small purple binder. As we try them and like them, they get moved to the big binder in their appropriately labeled section. Through this I hope to gather many recipes we love, and not just eat the same things over and over. Lexi is excited to help menu plan each week too.

There is already a bunch of recipes that look good which have been put in sleeves and now into the purple binder. I plan on posting my weekly menus on Monday's and linking up with I'm An Organizing Junkie. I'll let you know what recipe is new, and after I make it that week, I'll let you know if it is a keeper that you might want to try.

My menu this week is:

  • Monday - Crockpot chicken, cheesy mashed potatoes, green beans
  • Tuesday - Macaroni and cheese with ham mixed in
  • Wednesday - Easy Chicken and Dumplings (New recipe)
  • Thursday - Chili Cheese hot dogs with chips
  • Friday - Tacos, Mexican rice and corn
  • Saturday - Pizza
  • Sunday - Leftovers or possibly another new recipe

With my (fairly recent) enjoyment of cooking, I think this is going to be a fun new challenge. I definitely hope to stick with it and hopefully by sharing it with all of you I will. Hope you are having a great day!♥

What a great project. I can't wait for the reviews. Loved your blackeyed pea soup recipe. Have fun.

Can you come and organize all of my recipes, too? I definitely could use some help! You have officially inspired me to gather up all of my recipe clippings and lookm over them to decide if they're worth keeping or not. HAPPY COOKING!

This sounds like the kind of project that I could stick too! I enjoy cooking but I do not like going to the grocery store!! Ugh! Even though my husband says I go there everyday!
Can't wait to see how the chicken and dumplings turn out. Being a good southern girl I really should know how to make those but I don't! It's one of my favorite dishes too!
Have fun,
Libby

Sounds like a winning idea..I know what you mean about getting in a rut with cooking.

That will be fun reading about your recipe review...and seeing your posted menu may give me some ideas something different to fix.

How fun. I love cooking too and find that life (& the budget) runs so much smoother when you have a weekly plan. Keep posting that weekly menu so I can get some new ideas. I feel like I do the same things every week.

That is a great idea. I need to do that with all of my recipes.

Go for it, Darlene, and be sure to share the winners. That crockpot chicken sounds interesting to me. If it's easy, I'd like the recipe.

Can't wait to see what recipes you try out love and post!!! I told my grown daughters that we need to start making a menu and alternate cooking in order to save us all money and eating out too much which we have gotten into a bad habit of doing.. there are so many good places to eat here in Norman. :)~:(! Love your organization idea!!! Hope it will give me incentive!!!
This warm weather is a Blessing!
I even repotted some plants yesterday!

Great idea! I've just recently started cooking some new things (I bought my first actual recipe magazine ever if you can believe it) and I'm really enjoying it. I'm going to keep any eye on your recipes so maybe I can steal some. Have fun!

I will have to keep an eye on this, I hate planning what to cook. From all my recipes you'd think otherwise!

I can't wait!! You may be making my life a whole lot easier! We LOVE the taco soup and I made the pumpkin bread (I can see why Lexi LOVE it) it was a hit too! I love trying new recipes but with working and our etsy business I never seem to have the time. One thing Twin and I like to do is when boneless chicken breast are on sale we buy a bunch, cut them up, cook them and then freeze them. So easy when your making something and you don't have to cook the meat first. I do that with my hamburger and just the other night I had hubby cut up a pork loin into little pieces and we cooked and froze that too. My son just love the recipe that you take your cut up cooked chicken with cream of chicken soup, sour cream mix all of that and put it on the bottom of your baking dish, then take a sleeve of Ritz cracker and crush them up in a bowl, add a stick of melted butter with them, stir and put that on the top. Bake until bubbling. Not sure if you have tried that or not but I am sure Lexi would love it. We put it over noodles. Can't wait to see what you have for us!

I have done this myself and I call it my recipe blog, easily accessed from my regular blog. I have been menu planning for a long, long time and Laurie was a great help in doing that. She really knows her organization. While I have some of my favorite recipes on cards in a recipe box, and literally dozens of cookbooks ( Gooseberry Patch and Pillsbury being my favorites ), the bulk of my best stuff is on that blog. I look forward to watching your progress. I find it interesting to read other people's menus, too. Jogs the memory of some pretty good things you may have forgotten plus you can pick up new ideas.

Good for you to be so organized! I have never planned a whole week of menus, but when you don't have kids, cooking doesn't have the same meaning! I look forward to seeing your recipes.

What a great way to get organized! Recipes are, I think one of the hardest things to get organized.

You're doing something I've wanted to do for a long time! I'm also wanting to create a recipe book containing all my Mother's great recipes. Your menu looks yummy!

Hi Darlene, I did this several years ago and it took me a while but it is so worth it.

Can't wait to see your finished project.

This is a great idea Darlene.
I tend to make the same family favorites over and over...Sometimes it's good to venture out! Thanks for the inspriation!

I did something similar to this not too long ago and I'm SO glad I did! Now my recipes are all in one place or a cookbook. My next recipe project will be to type up which cookbook our favorite recipes are in. I pretty much know where they are, but if Sound Man were to try to find one, he'd have trouble! I'm looking forward to seeing some new recipes!

We do sort of the same thing here. I have a ton of reciepes like you torn out of magazines, hand written, printed from cooks.com, or whatever, and we strive to try one new one each grocery buying period (every 2 weeks). And, if it's a failure, they are trashed, and if it's a success we put them in a clear plastic sleeve and in the keep binder! Works really well for us. Hope you are having an awesome day!

This sounds like a plan! I told my husband we should start doing a menu plan each week too. He agreed but sometimes it's just easier to go out since there's only the 2 of us.

I love the idea of putting the recipes in a separate binder until you give it a try, then moving it over to another binder if it's a keeper. Great idea!

That is a wonderful idea, Darlene... I would love to start trying a new meal every week. I usually plan out my menu for 2 weeks because that's how often I go to the grocery store... and I get tired of making the same old thing. I need to organize my recipe stash and cookbooks too!
(Tell Lexi to come over and help me with mine- I need help! *LOL*)

What a great idea! I really need to go through all of my recipes and do the same!

That is a big undertaking. Good luck with it. I have recipes saved in my computer and then one cook book I use a lot. My family is not very good at trying new things! I hope you'll be sharing any good recipes you come across.

take care,
Dawn

HI Darlene! I think this is great. I'm ready to try some new recipes! And you always have great ones posted. I am cooking more for my parents...they love comfort food and in their 80's they are not interested in dieting but delicious food! Big smile. I'm interested in dieting and good food too! You have inspired me!
I will stay tuned!
Blessings,
Debbie

Oooh! What an awesome project: and we'll all benefit from your shared recipes- yum! I try to follow a similar goal at my house and try new recipes each week. It's a blast, but since I have so many cookbooks I'm constantly making new things it seems! My husband's joke whenever I serve dinner is "Wow this is good, but I'll never see it again"!

Lorrie said...

Good for you Darlene. It's nice to have all your recipes organized not only so you know what you actually have, but because it does motivate you to try new things. A great winter project. Have fun!

Your challenge is right up my new minimalistic alley. I love this. I really like your menu for this week--can we have the recipes too?

Jenni @ nest to keep said...

This is a great idea, and I should "copy" you! My recipes are stacked up on a tray, and really need some organization! :) And I know what you mean about wanting to do something different than just eating the same meals over and over...my husband and I are trying to cook different things lately, because we are so tired of the same old meals! :)

I hope you are doing well! Have a fantastic day! :)

Another great idea from my friends...now you must share the chicken crock pot recipe...I am on the hunt for any slow cooker recipe.

Be sure and share your binders when you get them all finish...so good Lexi is getting into the fun...you are sharing experiences as a Mom she will pass down to her child one day.

Yay for you, Darlene. Getting your recipes organized feels great, doesn't it? I like to try new recipes too. It's kind of like books . . . so many recipes, so little time. . .

I too have been recording my weekly new to me recipes on my blog. My goal is 52 new recipes this year and I've already surpassed greater than one recipe most weeks thus far.

Keep up the great work!

I'm going to be doing the same with my recipes. I've put my laptop on the breakfast table for easier access to type in the recipes we've cut out of mags and newspapers. Good luck!
