Just How Much Can Kids Memorize????

Well, Lexi was ready to start school but I think she may have changed her mind now.  At this point she has three tests this week, and who knows what other teacher may decide they need to test.  One today in Science (this is her not-happy studying face) and she has to memorize two pages front and back.
On Friday, she also has a test in Reading/Writing.  A list of definitions from stories, example:  plot, setting, exposition, climax, historical fiction  and many more.  Also, on Friday she has a spelling test.  She also has to have 150 minutes of reading each week (after school) and on Friday it is checked and they get a pass or fail.  I am ALREADY finding all of the studying (with Lexi) to be a bit challenging.
Hope you are all having a great week.  You know what we will be doing tonight.......studying and reading!!!!!

Hi Darlene
Poor Lexi, that's a lot of work and tests for so early in the school term. Good luck Lexi - you can do it.

EEK!! That is alot of work for one tiny girl! I really dislike homework!! The whole "plan the whole evening around homework, get your homework done!" business!! No homework has to be one of the top 5 things about Summer!
Good Luck Lexi!

That is hard. It gets worse too as they move into high school. Can you imagine it is said that the US is lax in education compared to other countries? Sure doesn't seem that way. With extracurricular activities our little ones are so busy and stressed. Good luck to Lexi. Attitude is half the battle and she has a great one!

As Marilyn posted this is hard - both for Lexi and you...but you are the kind of Mother that takes an interest in your child and will help her. Think of the number of parents that don't and won't help the child.

Hang in there!

School can be so overwhelming. Seems as though all the homework, studying, and testing starts earlier and earlier. Praying for Lexi...and momma! Hope everything goes well and she succeeds on the tests and homework!

That stinks, so much for easing into school slowly. I feel the same way about homework as an adult that I did as a's too much. We received a paper home saying our 4th grader should be doing 60 minutes of homework per night. Seven hours of school plus an hour of homework just seems like too much for a 9 year old.
Good luck on your tests Lexi!! Hope you do great!

Good Morning Darlene ~

I completely agree with everyone! I think that too much homework is given to these little people. Six hours of school and then at least 2 hours of homework and may the angels help your poor child if they are sick and have to "make up" missed homework AND school work...too much in my opinion. Our daughter had homework over the summer...which really didn't bother me...but, I just thought I would add that to my rant.

These are the days we will miss...right?

I hope that Lexi is enjoying school...she is such a lovely young gal...good job Darlene!

Have a happy Wednesday.

Smiles ~ Ramona

I've read where the brain actually shrinks when you go on vacation. With that in mind, this really is a lot to start out with. Sometimes, being middle-age, I look back on my school days and think, no way would I graduate with all these proficiency tests & new curriculum standards. And I graduated 9th in my HS class. Best of luck to Lexi and kudos to you for being so involved.

I feel ya on this one! Kayla has a test in each subject every week. Not to mention pop quizes throughout the week. She has the most homework in Math...They have them do SO much! She spent one afternoon at the kitchen table for 3 hours, just on Math homework. I was right there with her back and forth between cooking dinner. It was crazy. How it gets worse as they get older, I don't know!

Hey Darlene,
Wow, you'd think the girl was in college-I bet college is easier!
I know Lexi can do it because she memorizes all those plays~
I think you and her will be needing a mindless weekend though!

It does sound like a lot of homework, but it's good prep for the years to come. I predict it will get easier as the year moves along. Hang in there, Lexi, you will be a success!

Glad she has your help.
